James Flavian Higgins


James F. Higgins, 89, a farmer and carpenter from Lakeville, joined his loved ones who have gone on before him on May 9, 2019. Jim was born and lived most of his life on the farm his family held for three generations. He completed grade 10 in a one-room schoolhouse, and finished his GED later, when joining the Army. In 1952 he married Rita Ostertag and they started a family. He served in the Korean War from 1953-1955. In the early 60’s he sold part of the farm and built a new home on the homestead to support their growing family. He became a union carpenter at that time building homes and then moving on to commercial construction. In 1996 when Rita died, he sold the farm and moved to Hastings and Apple Valley before moving to the Veteran’s Home in Minneapolis where he received exceptional, loving care.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Rita (Ostertag), Also preceded in death by three siblings and their spouses, Eleanor & Bill Sullivan, Stanley & June Higgins, and Eileen & Kenny Williamson; and two children, Ann and Marie, who died in infancy. Jim is survived by six children, Mike “Hoss” (Sue) Higgins, Mary (Tony) Kadrlik, Marge (Mary Opila) Higgins, Dennis (Kristin) Higgins, Diane Higgins, and Bridget (Douglas) Adams; nine grandchildren, Jeanna (Cole Nyberg) Higgins, Jasmine Higgins, Angela (Brad) Whited, Andy (Lauren) Kadrlik, Beth Kadrlik, Matt Kadrlik, Katherine Higgins, Elena Adams and Jackson Adams; two great-grandchildren, Carter and Jayla Nyberg; brothers and sisters-in-law Liz and Marv Vinje, Philip Girgen, Joanne Ostertag, Kay Ostertag, and Wesley Rolfing; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends both old and new.

 We cannot always know what effect a person’s goodness has had on the world, but we always know what effect it has had on us, and this is the memory we hold in our hearts forever. In the presence of death, we must continue to sing the song of life.

 Funeral service Tuesday, May 14, 11 AM, All Saints Catholic Church, 19795 Holyoke Ave, Lakeville. Visitation 1 hr. prior to the service.
