All winter sports have been canceled at Carleton College in Northfield.

The college, which is home to Division III men’s and women’s basketball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, and tennis in the winter, announced Friday its plan to cancel all “in-person varsity athletic competition” this winter “due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”

The cancellations run through March 15, 2021, though the “door remains open for potential virtual competitions in swimming & diving and indoor track & field,” the announcement says. The college also hasn’t ruled out moving the canceled sports to the spring, but that “has not been determined.”

Carleton College is part of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (MIAC). No other MIAC athletic departments have canceled winter sports.

“It breaks my heart once again having to inform our student-athletes and coaches that their season has been canceled,” said Carleton Athletic Director Gerald Young, in the release.

“This is the third time we’ve had to make this decision, and each time we did so with sadness because we know how much competition means to our student-athletes. However, the health and safety of the entire campus community is the most important thing, and this continues to be the right decision.”

Winter teams can still practice and train despite not being allowed to compete.

No decision has been made yet regarding spring sports, which includes baseball, softball, golf, tennis and outdoor track and field.
