LESUEUR COUNTY NEWS
After a two-month detour, Le Sueur-Henderson school officials moved quickly to fill the joint activities director and dean of students position, announcing Friday the selection of Jeff Christ.
Christ, an LS-H physical education and health teacher, has also served as head track coach for 11 years while also coaching the district’s cross-country program in the fall sports season.
It finally fills the void being left by the Dec. 31 retirement of longtime LS-H administrator and coach, Dave Swanberg, who had served the district in a variety of positions over a 33-year career. Swanberg is semi-retiring, taking a part-time position as Region 2A secretary for the Minnesota State High School League.
Filling the post took an odd turn after the district originally announced Oct. 26 the hiring of Eric Kauffmann, formerly a teacher and coach in the Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunburg schools. Kauffmann was scheduled to take over the LS-H activities director and dean of students Jan. 2, but he submitted his resignation effective Nov. 28.
The board originally approved hiring Kauffmann at its Nov. 5 meeting, then also approved those minutes at the next LS-H School Board meeting Nov. 19. But at the board’s Dec. 3 meeting, with Kauffmann’s resignation on a consent agenda, Director Kelsey Schwartz asked to have it removed for discussion. Schwartz informed LS-H Superintendent Marlene Johnson she did not have enough information as to why Kauffmann resigned, and directors voted 4-to-2 to table the acceptance.
Board Chairwoman Andrea Faches, in an email, said Schwartz and other directors apparently were informed by Johnson of those reasons after the Dec. 3 meeting, and the Kauffmann resignation was finally unanimously accepted by the full LS-H School Board at its Dec. 17 meeting. But the district has not announced any official details on why Kauffmann resigned.
